1 Tm 6:2c-12; Lk 8:1-3

Accompanying Jesus and the Twelve were some women who provided for them out of their resources. Often, we slough off our “charity” to the state or various NGOs. But there is no substitute for hands-on help. The women who provided for them from their resources include Mary Magdalene, “from whom seven demons had gone out,” and Joanna, from Herod’s household. They lived Jesus’ mission and found there is a substitute for Jesus — every poor person who ever lived! At the canonization of Mother Teresa, Pope Francis said, “Those who serve the poor and the needy do not expect any thanks or recompense; rather, they renounce all this because they have discovered true love.” And I don’t forget my own poverty, that others have graciously filled. O Lord, I will not fear in evil days when my ensnarers ring me round!
